Boomerang Information.
The Boomerang is a Traditional Australian Aboriginal Hunting Weapon.
Have you ever heard of the old joke, “If a Boomerang dosen’t come back, it’s called a stick”. We have heard this many times at our community markets where we sell our products and our answer to the old joke is, that it’s not a stick but it could be a Killer or Hook Boomerang.
After reading the boomerang information below you will quickly learn that not all boomerangs come back.
There are three basic Boomerangs that I make, these being the Killer, Hook or No.7 and the Comeback. The design and sizes of boomerangs often change throughout Australia but there are some similarities.
All my Boomerangs have their own patterns and unique features and are individually hand crafted using the natural bush timbers of the Katherine Region.
I use native hardwood timbers such as Ironwood, Bush Bohemia, Kerosene Wood, Lancewood, Snappy Gum, Salmon Gum, Coolibah, Ebony, Beefwood and Black Wattle.
Killer Boomerang: The Killer Boomerang can be designed for a left or right-handed person and is used as a straight throwing weapon that doesn’t return. Thrown by a skilled person it can deliver a killing blow on its intended target. Killer boomerangs were also used in traditional corroborees similar to clapsticks keeping in time with the didgeridoo. I also make a double-edged killer boomerang, which is neither left nor right handed. It can be used in the same way for throwing as the right or left hand killer boomerang but we made it especially as a musical instrument.
Hook Boomerang/No.7: The Hook Boomerang can be designed for a right or left-handed person and as the name suggests is shaped like a hook and doesn’t come back. I first saw the Hook Boomerang being made by my wife’s Grandfather Fred Blitner Snr. at Beswick Community in the mid 1980’s. Fred has passed on now and I continue his tradition copying his unique design of the Hook Boomerang. The Hook Boomerang is also often referred to as a number seven boomerang. This boomerang was used as a hand held weapon, gouging in a downward motion causing severe injury or death to its victims. It was also used as a hunting weapon in a similar way as the Killer Boomerang but at close range. I also make a Double Edged Hook Boomerang.
Comeback Boomerang: The Comeback Boomerang can also be designed for a right or left-handed person. As the name suggests this Boomerang if made correctly does come back. Used as a weapon for killing flying game. If the boomerang misses the target it will come back and land close to the thrower.
